I was reading a couple of books on "Creation" and there was no explaination as to why we have toes. Neither was there a truly practical use for them. Unless, at one time we climbed trees, but that isn't mentioned in any creation book except negatively. I know all the primates have toes and not hoofs, but why would the Christian God burden us with an attribute of primates that have no practical use--well, wearing flip-flops maybe. Toes get stuck in odd places and freeze off, and get stubbed. Is it a faith thing....that we have toes to test our faith or something like that? I mean even the giants had toes in the old testament--6 of them on each foot. Help me out....this is a real mystery, because the Christians say God created us whole, so we've always had toes, but we aren't evolved from primates, and "Why do we have toes?"
An aside.....toe nails....I mean really. That could be a whole thesis.

Come now! A solid bit of flesh in front of the joint would make walking even easier and be less suseptable to injury.

I had four toes broken--changeing a tire--and they just taped them all together. I walked fine.

Well, if I were going to 'intelligently design' the foot of a biped I would just make the forefoot flexible and leave off the vulnerable toes. I will say tho, I sometimes, when barefoot, pick up objects with my toes, to save bending over. So toes are of SOME use

We have toes for the purpose of balance. If you don't have toes, or you loose your toes in an accident, you will have to completely relearn how to walk. Stub or break your toe really bad and then go work an 8 hr. shift as a waiter - you'll see! Bet you'll go home in less than an hour!

Toes help stabilize the feet that support the body. Without them people would fall over more easily. Toenails help protect the tips of the toes from damage. That's the purpose that they serve. Toes have nothing to do with religious belief.

The toe, in humans the big toe or hallux, is the last lever used to push off the ground during walking. Without that toe, the mechanics of walking would be very difficult, and not very efficient.

For balance, picking up stray crayons, wiggling in the swimming pool.... Some people can paint holding a brush with their toes.
There really aren't any unnecessary parts. The tonsils and appendix, while we can live without them, are functional in the body to filter toxins.

Why do you sound like you hate toes? (LoL)
And don't you have balance from your toes? (I heard you mention you broke toes changing a tire and taped them, but come on, man. You KNOW you wobbled to and fro for a few days.)

toes are useful, try the appendix if you want a useless body part.
