Do you know where the last name sterling comes from? Because I have always wondered. I don't know how to look it up on the internet. It only talks about sterling silver. Thanx bunches.

It appears that Sterling has Scottish origins

and Tolliver appears to have Scottish origins as well

Looking for the origin of a certain name is a common question here. And it's fine if that is all someone wants. But it does not tell you anything for certain. Here are a couple of links to surname message boards if you are interested. They do have a specific boards for Sterling AND Tolliver. Many who frequent these boards are genealogists and may have some more insight into your specific surname. There are also separate boards for states, counties, and countries if you are interested. There is a chance that your Tollivers and Sterlings didn't come from Scotland. Your best bet would be to research your particular line person by person, generation by generation.

My sister's reading a book where a guy has the last name "Stirling" and his family came from a city called Stirling in Scotland (she thinks). Try there?

I believe they're both English... Sorry, I don't have my resources with me to look them up, so I'm going off of memory.
