Some of the answers you have received are mistaken on the facts about the death penalty. For their benefit, here are a few verifiable and sourced facts about it. I think that many people, Christians and others, do not yet know the facts.
Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence, many having already served over 2 decades on death row. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person. Once someone is executed the case is closed. If we execute an innocent person the real criminal is still out there and will have successfully avoided being charged.
Re: DNA
DNA is available in less than 10% of murder cases. It’s not a miracle cure for sentencing innocent people to death. It’s human nature to make mistakes.
Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn’t a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think about the consequences or even that they will be caught (if they think at all.)
Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The huge extra costs start to mount up even before the trial. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.
Re: Alternatives
48 states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is swift and sure and is rarely appealed. Being locked in a tiny cell, forever, is certainly no picnic. Life without parole incapacitates a killer (keeps him from re-offending) and costs considerably less than the death penalty.
Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??
Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.
Opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you condone brutal crimes or excuse people who commit them. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning the facts and making up their minds using common sense, not revenge or an eye for an eye sloganeering.

I am a Christian and I am in favor of the death penalty. The Bible says an eye for an eye. And it's not about choosing whose lives are sacred and killing whoever. When a person commits a heinous crime an appointed judge (an uncorrupted one) should be able to pass sentencing and if the situation merits, the death penalty. For example, I believe that if you murdered someone, (not including accidents or in acts of self defense, I mean murdered someone because you wanted to) then you should receive the death penalty. I find it absurd that a person who steals something, while the act is wrong, will get 5 to 10 years in prison, and someone who rapes a little girl gets out in barely a year. And then the government says that our jails are getting too full. It's ridiculous. If you commit the crime, then you should deal with the consequences. If you intentionally murder someone, then you deserve the death penalty.

Being in favor of this doesn't make life any less sacred. Even God is vengeful, just read the first Testament. Even though Christianity teaches forgiveness, there are still feelings that are left behind. Those that receive the death penalty have made others suffer and their family will suffer as well. This is how our justice system works. In God We Trust.....right! If they are innocent may God have Mercy on their souls. Go St.Peter.

What, the life of the victim is of no consequence? What about the next victim when we let them go back in to society?
"Other Christians are hypocrites."
You mean the ones trying to get the Bible into the hands of the common man, and were burned at the stake by the Roman Catholics? Or do you mean the Catholic Crusades, or the Spanish Inquisition? Perhaps you mean other hypocrites?
Perhaps all these negative posts against Christians fail to realize that even before the Mosaic law was written, God made it quite clear that life was indeed sacred. And that the taking of life required the same punishement at the hands of man.
“Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man”- Genesis 9:6
Seems too many "Christians" or their accusers are too busy trying to be politically correct and trying to rehabilitate the reprobate and sociopathic.

Yes some are sacred and some aren't. God said to stone your family if you catch them bowing down to a false god. So in that case they wouldn't be sacred.

The death penalty for those who trash life is showing respect for life. Just like punishing the thief shows respect for property ownership.

If there is a high probability that the person would continue to kill if by chance he got out of prison then, you are protecting the life of the innocent in putting the person to death so it is pro life in that instance.

Yep - they say killers must die, but we cannot kill unborn babies.
Yes they get to choose which lives are sacred. They want to beleive that they are like God. It makes them look better than us "non-beleivers"
And they wonder why we call them HYPOCRITES!!!
