This is for my literature class. This is suppose to be the easiest question, but I cannot find the freaking answer! The question is: Why are the knights searching for the Holy Grail? I have all of the other answers; I don't know if I keep reading over it or what. Any helpful information is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

It's the story of the Holy Grail by Chretien De Troyes. It is in my Norton Anthology of Western Literature book.

I know what the Grail is...I just don't know why the knights in the story are searching for it. Are they searching for it because King Arthur told them to, or what?

because it supposedly was the cup that Jesus used in the last supper, and also held his blood from the crucifixion. Who WOULDN'T want to find that?

First, a definition: The Holy Grail is said the be the actual Kiddush (blessing) cup from which Jesus and the apostles drank at the last supper.

People are searching for other things as well: The tablets containing the 10 Commandments (The Decalog), Solomon's ring to name a couple; Abraham's staff that was in the Ark with the tablets as well as the jar containing the pieces of manna that were in there as well.

To find Jesus' cup would certainly electrify the entire world as people have been searching for it for many centuries.

I believe that the knights of the Round Table thought that the Holy Grail would bring the power of God to unite Arthur's kingdom. Look under "King Arthur"

If you mean the Knights Templar, they aren't searching for it, they are protecting it from others that are searching for it. They must hide and move it many many times throughout history so much so that noone knows where it rests today. Especially since the Pope ordered all Knights Templar killed, the secret location has been lost forever.

The quest for the grail is the quest for the truth.
