Good question, Saritta!
I assume that you don't have a New Testament. Because of this I will quote some of the story to you as it is written in the New Testament. There are four writers who wrote about the life of Jesus while He was on earth, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Matthew and John were among the 12 disciples of Jesus, Mark was a close friend of some of the disciples, Luke was a medical doctor, who travelled for many years with the Apostle Paul, and was a native of the city of Antioch (which today is in Turkey).
Not all writers tell the story exactly in the same way, each wrote it from his own experience or learning. (For example if four witnesses see the same car accident, each will tell it a bit different, depending on their own perspective--the same is true for the writers of the Gospels.)
Okay, now to your question:
After Jesus died, Joseph, of the town of Arimathea, a rich man, who belonged to the Jewish governing council, went to Pilate, the Roman governor and asked for permission to take Jesus body and bury Him in His own grave. Graves at that time were not holes in the ground like today, but caves.
Along with Nicodemus, (who was a secret follower of Jesus just like Joseph of Arimathea) they put Jesus' body in the cave that Joseph had bought for himself and his family. They rolled a big stone in front of the cave and went away.
Now I will copy some of the story as it is written in the Gospel of Matthew in chapter 27 and 28:
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb. 62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 "Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first." 65 "Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how." 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
28:1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you."
8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me." 11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, 13 telling them, "You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." 15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.
Doctor Luke wrote a second book, which follows right after the 4 gospel accounts. This book is called the "Acts of the Apostles" or usually just "Acts".
I will quote now from this book of Acts, from the first chapter, of what happened to Jesus afterward:
1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.
5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.
11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."
Right now I don't have the time to answer the rest of your question, but if you want me to tell you more you can email me.
AFTER TWO BUSY DAYS, I WANT TO ANSWER THE REST OF YOUR QUESTION: “What do you believe will happen when Jesus comes back?
The Bible tells of two events when Jesus returns from heaven to earth. The first is a SECRET RETURN, when He will take all His followers to heaven as described in these verses:
1. Thess 4:16-17 “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.”
This even will happen in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye: 1. Cor. 15:51-53 “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.”
Matth. 24:39-41 “That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
After all the followers of Jesus have been taken to heaven, there will be a terrible time on the earth which the Bible describes as the GREAT TRIBULATION, which will last for seven years. During this time the ANTICHRIST will rule on the earth.
After the seven years of tribulation Jesus will come to earth and fight against all His enemies and win. After that Satan will be locked away for one thousand years and Jesus will rule the earth. Then Satan will be allowed one last short period on earth where he gathers the unbelievers to fight against Jesus and those who belong to Him.
I will now copy another part from the last book of the Bible which describes what will happen after that:
Rev. 20:7- 21:1 “When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth— Gog and Magog— to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them.
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.
Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.”
