Clip in highlights. How many should I buy?

I'm getting bubblegum pink clip-in highlights for my hair. They're eight dollars each. I don't want my hair to be COVERED. I still want it to be more dark brown than pink. My hair is a couple inches below shoulder length and relaxed. I'm willing to spend a couple extra bucks to be safe, but I'm still on a budget. How many should I buy?

get 5 clip in highlights first. then if they look good get real highlights.
