who would do this? a contractor? i don't know what to look under in the yellow pages!! haha....help??!!?!

Look under general contractor.. If you do it yourself ..remember start at the very top. not the center or it will colapse on you.

haha. i did this with my closets in 2 bedrooms then rebuilt a new one in one of the bedrooms. i called it therapy.
but all in all depends on how fast you to get something done and are you going to replace it with something else or another fireplace or just a blank wall. most important with fireplaces is the hole in the roof, do you think you can fix that as well if not then go for a contractor at least to repair the roof so you can have some satisfaction in part of it, of doing it yourself.
i really loved doing the work myself,esp. the hammering. aw such destruction, such satisfaction.
