I dont think the painting is anything special, everyone thinks its so great and wonderful, its just a night sky

I think its awesome. There is a lot of symbolism in that painting. One of the most interesting things about the painting is that the only building in the painting that doesn't have its lights on is the church. Do some research on it. You will find rather interesting....

I think it's a great painting. You can see the brush strokes of the illuminating night sky and the swirling of the clouds. This sky keeps the viewer's eyes moving about the painting, following the curves and creating a visual dot to dot with the stars. This movement keeps the onlooker involved in the painting. The swirling clouds, stars and the cresent moon are ablazed with their luminescence.

Van Gogh painted that as a Presbyterian response to Gauguin's Catholic 'Yellow Christ'. Not that that really matters.
You have to see the real painting to appreciate it. That may sound trite but trust me on this, it is awesome.

I think it more about the way he painted. Everything prior to that was so flat and airbrushed looking. He was a very disturbed person and probably had a mental disorder, that was relfected in his furious brushstrokes.

If you haven't seen it in person there's no way to appreciate the expressionistic brushstrokes that give an unbelievable energy to the sky.

I think it's an absolute treasure of Van Gogh's art and definitely my favorite. I adore the way his brush strokes move of the canvas and the rich colors he chose.

I agree with you it is overrated. But it is now worth a lot of money.
