I would imagine any animal that is friendly and patient. My parents adopted a "used" dachshund from a rescue organization and he has worked wonders on my dad, who is mid-stages of Alzheimer's. Although my dad can't really do anything to help CARE for the dog, he plays with the dog and hugs it and interacts with it. (And with the cat.)

i should think any type of pet would be a good companion for someone in this state. proving there is someone else around to check that the animal is being cared for and not forgotten.
