Public education isn't where it COULD or SHOULD be in this country. But I think that parenting has much more to do with how a child grows up, and what they do and do not believe spiritually.

Religious beliefs are used by all Governments and all News Medias to opiate the masses. That's why Pres. Bush gives you Jesus and in Iran they give the people Allah. When Pope Benedict had a law-suit filed against him, all news agencies agreed not to report on it. A life after death belief serves as Prozac for the people. This is done while World Governments rob the citizens blind.

Poor education for some sectors of society.
US contribution to today's world science and culture is enormous. So it cannot be lack of intelligence.

In some areas, like the south, that is definitely true. The south is the bible belt and full of ignorant uneducated fundies. I know, I live there. Not ALL of the south, but a big portion.

Aww, that's not nice sweetie. FYI: many Christians are very intelligent, so smart that we know the Bible and know that God is in charge. I'm just a product of my Baptist church, silly me.

Basically, yes, and the theists are trying to keep it poor and make it worse. Presumably they can see that it's the only way their beliefs can survive (by stifling reason and evidence).

Unfortunately yes. There is a premium in the US in conformity which is (or at least was) lacking in, say, the UK, questioning things is not so encouraged in my experience.

The education in the US is not what it should be. But religion is indoctrinated from birth at home. But [thanks to education] more and more are seeing the fallacies of religion, but remain "closet" Atheist.
