For maximum fun, an AEG is hard to beat.
The trick is, getting an AEG that will perform well and last a long time. There are a lot of low-priced AEG's out there that are good for little more than hanging on the wall. The things you want to look for in chosing an AEG are these:
1)Metal Gearbox,
2)Metal Gears,
3)Metal Barrel,
4)High Capacity Magazine,
5)Battery and Charger INCLUDED.
A good AEG that fulfills all these qualifications can be had for about 100.00
Past that, everything else about an AEG is cosmetic. The lower-priced AEG's have predominantly ABS plastic bodies. They are reasonably durable, and real-looking, but they feel like plastic. For more money, you can have metal bodied guns that feel and weigh the same as their real-life counterparts.
There are hundreds of different models from a dozen or more manufacturers on the market. There are AEG's that immitate the looks of almost any assault-rifle or SMG used by any major world army since WWII. Whatever you want, somebody makes it, and if you look hard enough, you can find it. Even such esoteric WWII era items as M-1 Garands and Carbines, M-3 grease guns, MP-40's, and the BAR, have been reproduced as airsoft guns. I suggest you keep the 5 items above in mind, and surf some airsoft online catalogs, and see what catches your eye. Here's a couple to get you started,

if this is your first or second gun a gas gun is not the way to go. if your on a tight budget(less then $50) go to shorty usa and get yourself a nice spring gun like a UHC 1911 pistol 19.99 plus shipping. or a KWC Colt 1911A1 Softair Spring Pistol 29.99 plus shipping. an excelent gun is a UTG M87LA Spring Airsoft Shotgun. any of its 3 models are great 37.99-34.99 and this gun is good also UTG M87LA Spring Airsoft Shotgun. if you want a higher end gun and are willing to pay more then $300 all classic army guns are great. my favs are the m-4, m15a4 and the m16, another is the g36c also by calssic army. those guns can run over $300 and get pricy fast with a good battery and ammo. so far i have 3 guns a utg m324 sniper(with another $120 in parts), a m4 and a (m15a4 with atleast another 400 in parts) ive gotten a tightbore barrel, upgraded spring, 9.6v 4200 mah battery and a grenade launcher for it. (i didnt get all that at once) tm, ics and g and g guns are good high end ones as well but i dont own any of them

automatic airsoft guns that leave a good mark and hurt bad are about $100 or more(mostly tokyo mauri, which is a very expensive brand that can be upgraded to almost pierce flesh.some can.) go to airsoftatlanta.com they have grenade launchers,SAW's,m16's,ect. their guns are metal also. they sell upgrades. i turned toward paintball because many said that it hurts more and is about the same price as the lower end airsoft guns that cost $100 also airsoftatlanta isn't the cheapest place, try websites that sell the brands on airsoft atlanta like madbull, ics(i think it is,or is it cis.i don't know)classic army, and some panther arms guns are good to.

I would get a spring, pump action, shotgun. With all of the other guns it takes a while to pull the reciver it and the automatic ones arn't that strong (low fps) and with a pump action you get a good punch and you have much faster recievr pulling time.

i would say an aeg. i would have to say out of my collection of guns my favorite would have to be my ics m4. ICS is the best out of the three major airsoft guns(Classic Army, Tokyo Marui, and ICS.) ICS are pre-upgraded internal and more durable. i have been to alot ops I have seen alot of broken classic armys and tokyo maruis. these guns cost around 200-450. now if you don't fell like spending that much i would reccomend stuff like utg and echo 1. those guns are around 120-180. they still have a metal gearbox. they are an awesome starter gun. i have a utg m14 in my collection and it works great.
go to evike.com and browse around.

I personally like almost all Electric rifles or AEGs. In this I mean M-16s, AKs, and other european guns. MP5 is a good submachine gun. I do not like spring because they do not have automatic fire.
