I'm finishing my first year of university and I just received a scholarship from the financial aid office, what I'm wondering is how I would address a Jane Doe in a thank you letter when I don't know what her marital status is. Thanks!

You would use Ms. Jane Doe. Mrs.=means she is married. Miss=means she is single. Ms.=is when you are unsure so you use this just to be safe.

Ms. Jane Doe is the best way to go!

Etiquette would suggest covering all the bases. Address the letter "Dear Sir or Maam"

To whom it may concern,

Greetings Jane Doe,

Or do what I do. Assume they are a miss. If you mistakenly call someone single married, they might take offense, but if you mistakenly call someone married single, they would not. They might see it as a complement that you think they are younger than they are or prettier, something along those lines.

congs for ur scholarship!
you could address her as Ms, pronounced (miz) which goes for both married and single women.

Well you could call the office and find out, but usually Ms. is sufficient
