Sangria is actually a mix of red wine(tinto) fruit juice, sometimes brandy and fresh fruit. You can buy the 'knock off' version already mixed, minus the fresh fruit. This type, although tasty, is loaded with sugar. You can also buy a sangria in a wine bottle, even though it is labeled sangria it is probably meant to make sangria with. In Spain they call sangria 'limonada' and the spanish word 'sangre' means 'blood'. If you google it I bet you can find sangria recipes that differ greatly. Sangria is typically a summer drink but i thinks it is delicious anytime! I currently live in spain and that stuff is REAL GOOD!

sangria is wine, usually red, mixed with fruit juices.

from wikipedia:
Sangría is a wine punch (more formally and precisely, a fortified wine) which originated in Portugal and Spain. The word sangria comes from the Spanish "sangre" meaning blood. It typically consists of
a red wine,
chopped or sliced fruit,
a sweetener such as honey or orange juice,
a small amount of added brandy, triple sec, or other spirits.
lemonade or another soft drink

sangria is like a punch made from wine, fruit juice and sometimes grand mariner (orange flavored liquer) or brandy.

so it does contain wine, but is more of a mixed drink made with wine.

It's not viewed as a wine in the wine community. It's more of a wine cocktail.

That doesn't mean it's not good, it just means that it's not considered a wine.

It is made with real wine as a primary base, usually red (like the name Sangre' or blood).
Usually mixed with fruit juices and something sweet like 7-Up, honey, sweet brandy, etc.
