Well, the controversial historical answer is really an understanding of how western history has been written. The winners of wars write the history books that are taught. In western history, the winners have largely been the white European colonialists, and therefore, the "non-winners" (or losers of the wars) have been the non-white masses. As white / non-white racism is easily documented throughout western history, another binary (Christian / heathen, pagan, Islamic, other religions, sinners) works to create the simultaneous cause for the hatred against Muslims. Since the Catholic church organized governmental roles throughout much of medieval times and earlier in western history, this second binary of Christian/Muslim was forced in the historical mindset to co-exist with whiteness/non-whiteness (a.k.a. pure/impure, righteous/unrighteous, blessed/sinful, and even God's people/Devil's people). Institutions, educated attitudes, and even so-called groups "promoting" equality among races all were informed by these binaries and subsequently were given power to execute their versions of racist ideology. These are some of the reasons why people hate Muslims in western cultures. When classism enters this discussion, the racism gets even more hurtful, since the upper class people were often (wealthy) white and educated, while the lower class people were (poor) non-white and less educated. Again, institutions (educational institutions) also promoted the easy-to-live-with binary complacently: white / non-white and Christian / Muslim.

Because they are ignorant and don't bother to get to know Muslims and believe every lie they are told by the Media. Which is sad. And yes I agree that we are all brothers and sisters in God's way. I'm Muslim and I'm getting kind of sick of all the hate bashing questions about Islam and Muslims. I don't mind if people ask legitimate questions about Islam but when you go into how Islam needs to be wiped off the face of the Earth and how Muslims aren't human beings it gets under my skin and annoys me a lot.

I think you have used the wrong WORD here. If truth be known the overriding emotion is not hate but FEAR.
I don't think it is necessary for me to go into detail as to why a lot of people are afraid of mis-guided so called followers of Islam.
The problem is that TRUE followers of Islam are getting themselves MIXED-IN with the "Fascist types" of wrong thinking "Warmongers" masquerading as Islamic followers as also are True followers of Jesus have also got themselves mixed up with the almost same "Fascist" types of Christianity - characterised with George W. Bush at the Head!
The end result is that right now there are A LOT of very worried people in this world .
FEAR - not HATE when it should be LOVE.
Oh! Yes, I just remembered - The only PERFICT think in this universe is GOD - there is NO human being ANYWHERE that has got it totaly right.
We ALL have room for improvement!

I guess all the muslims around the world share the same feelings..perhaps jews can relate to it cause during Hitler's time jews all around the world were in a similar situation..and most of them still cant get over it it was soo dramatic and history once again is repeating it self. People hated Timothy macWeigh for the Oklahoma bombing but interestingly no body called him a christian terrorist ..same goes for the bombings in ireland..if i start generalizing i can go on n on..sadly we live in a 'freeworld' nowadays,'mordern' for some,'liberated' for others but still are caught up in using the lack of brains ,some of us (the people) think we are so smart and yet we generalize and let 'hate' rule.I do not hate anyone or any religion i try n understand it. If i come across a rude racist person belonging to a different religion or a country i think to myself is "ignore the moron" and move on..Funny how most of the people from other religions preach love humanity and yet muslims get soo much hate comming from the same religions.A very famous US politician once said ''after Russia ,islam is a major threat".

I am a muslim but I never abuse the leaders, founders and prophets of any religion…in fact I have friends from every colour, religion and race. And I am not against any colour people.. some blamings on Islam, Prophet Mohammad and Muslims have no authenticity, this is just the creation of your hatred mind, Some people are useless because their job is to sit home and abuse Muslims and Islam. The more they gain the less they have, Does their secular values or freedom of speech means to abuse other religion and faith. They need to sit with knowledgeable people who can teach them what respect is, There is no doubt in my mind that hatred minded people are the most repressive and oppressive form , It must be such a slap in the face for any racist. at least You're religion is yours , And my religion is mine. Salam

Welcome to the world of the Internet and yahoo answers.
Don't assume that everyone who opposes Islam gets their information directly from the media or the Internet. Making such assumptions is faulty.
Those of us who oppose the main teaching of Islam, that Christ was just a prophet, didn't get that from the media. Nor do some of us think that all Muslims are bad.
So, if you're going to be a frequent visitor to Yahoo! Answers you better toughen up or else you'll get your feelings hurt.
No one on the Internet has a heaven or hell to put you in so -- ignore the answers you don't like or as Dee says:
"If you aren't going to like the answer then, don't ask the question"

Actually, many times I also get REALLY frustrated when people bash me because of my Islamic beliefs. At first, I used to get really angry and depressed. Then I realised that the best way to deal with it is not to pay attention to all those Islamic bigots in the world. Let them rave; they are just insulting themselves.
As a Muslim, I also respect religions of all forms, including atheism etc. Everyone has a right to their own opinion.

So why not phrase the question differently. I see as much hate against every group worldwide, in fact whereas the west generally tries to calm its citizens with repeated calls for calm even from such as Blair and Bush, I see no such effort in say the Muslim world. In fact official textbooks in many arab countries actually teach hatred against infidels and kaffirs.
As I have said many times, hate usually accompanies a religious mindset.

There should definitely be no hate against Muslims or any other people from any other relgion, but there could be disagreement with the belief itself. For example we should not agree with What the Quran that says Christians and Jews should be killed. If the Quran tells that killing people is OK, then the hate is probably coming from the ones who believe in it. Muslims who follow the Quran will find it impossible to not hate all other religions. If a Muslim does not hate others then he is a disguised Muslim. Real Muslims are bound to hate others.
