Being a salesman is difficult--a lot of it is due to innate ability, but there are some things you can learn and improve. Some salespeople pressure people into buying more than what they need or want, but in the long run these are not the best salespeople because people won't be happy with their purchase. The best salespeople are those who give people exactly what they want--they want to make people happy so that they will either come back, or refer their friends. Another key is not talking too much--giving people only the information they need and want, and nothing more.
The most important thing about sales is connecting with people. You need to approach each individual with an open mind, without preconceived notions of what they can or can't afford or what they want. You can't always judge peoples' finances or needs by looking at them.
The best salespeople are those who quickly make people feel comfortable and at ease. They do not pressure anyone. They quickly find out exactly what the person is looking for, what they want, and what their needs are. Then, they locate the product that's the best match for what the person wants, and give the person all the information they need. The last quality in a salesman that is important is knowing how and when to close a sale, and also knowing when to stop wasting your time if someone doesn't want to buy something--when it's clear someone wants to buy something and is ready, then you need to stop talking and get them to buy it. When it's clear someone is not interested, you need to stop talking and let them go on your way so you can talk with someone else! A good rule is: ONLY GIVE THE PERSON AS MUCH INFORMATION AS THEY WANT. Spouting technical nonsense will confuse and intimidate customers...save technical info for people who are more knowledgeable and ask specific questions. Try to keep things simple for everyone else.
If you do a good job with one person, that person might become a repeat customer, and more importantly, they may tell all their friends about how great an experience they had with you. This is the main way that top salespeople are so successful--they make people happy so they get referrals.
I hope this helps--many of the aspects of being a good salesman are hard to put into words, but I think a lot of it can be summed up in what I've said above.
