I just found out that my brother, who has been divorced twice is marrying a (somewhat younger, and more attractive women who has never been married before) from Ukraine where he currently works. He doesn't not speak Ukrainian, but she speaks passable English. They already live together and we are planning a small wedding for them here in New Hampshire. I was very suprised to hear some of our long term family friends and some distant relatives jokingly refer to his future wife as a mail order bride. Do you think a lot of people would perceive the situation that way? Maybe I'm being naive, but the thought didn't even cross my mind.

Haved lived and worked in Europe and Latin America I know a few people who have married abroad or married foreign nationals here in the US. Yes there is always stigma, but people love who they love and you can't help that.

Having been to Odessa a few times, I can only think that the people who made these jokes are jealous because this woman is probably beautiful. It seems like they all were. Order by mail? Hmmm??

She is only a "mail order bride" if in fact he ordered her through the mail. Since it seems that this didn't happen, these family friends of yours should stop being so negative and catty.

Your friends are trying for whatever reason to put your brother down, just ignore their garbage. Its your brother's life, and for him to live it and find love anyway he can, you should wish your brother, and his new bride happiness. something your friends and distant relatives are probably missing in their own lives.

There are strange people in this world.

Ignore it.

I guess it may depend on the circles you travel in.
