It could be a ganglion cyst. Often the mass is actually at the anterior/ lateral wrist (inside of wrist on thumb side), but can occur elsewhere. These cysts cause compression of the median nerve and arterioles that supply the wrist. Pain on abduction of the thumb is common, as well as with general movement of the wrist. Ganglion cysts will often temporarily decrease in size seem to go away when pressed gently but firmly for several
seconds. See your Dr. and he may inject it with saline to break it up, or reccomend surgery. These are sometimes called Bible cysts, as a home remedy has been to have a family member whack it with a Bible to break it up. (Don't do this, as you risk nerve and/or vascular damage.)
