I am trying to plan a vacation for later in the year and wish to have all my ducks in a row. My options are Scotland or a cruise to the islands or mexico. Do I need a visa as well as a passport? Also what other important documents should I take with me?

You shouldn't need a visa for either Scotland or Mexico, but you will definitely need a passport. if you go on the cruise ask what locations you will be stopping at and if they require a visa (i don't think so, but I'm not 100% positive). you should carry at least 2 forms of id (dl is most common) and never carry all of them together. and make sure to make several copies of your documents, one for your luggage, another to keep on you (cut out so it will fit in your wallet), and one for friends and family (in case you need a replacement while gone).
another id that could be useful is a student id (if in school). best idea is to read at least 2 or 3 travel guides on your destination, to get familiar with your destination, if you don't want to buy one, you can check the library.
hope this helps, have a good trip!

If you are an American citizen and you have a valid passport you do not need a visa to the countries you mentioned, unless you plan on staying more then three months.
