what about leaving the cabinets white and painting the walls a darker color. a compromise, of sorts. then curtains to tie it all together (and keep the sun out a bit).

You shouldn't paint wood cabinets. Its a shame to cover the color of the natural wood. That being said, if the original cabinets were stained, they could be sanded down, and re-finished in a natural state (clear varnish) or stained a lighter color. Depending on the age of the cabinets, they may be all wood, unlike more recent cabinets which are a melamine interior, with a wood veneer exterior. If this is the case, be careful when sanding the veneer, as it is very thin. (Sometimes 1/64th to 1/32nd thick). If they are all wood, sanding is okay, and it will allow you to take dings and dents out of the wood, making the cabinets look much better.

Keep the white. Your dad seems to like the feeling of caves...haha. Let him pick the color paint for a more private room, as the kitchen is a very centralized part of the house.

who ever actualy spends more time in there cooking etc should choose, probably your mom. dark colored cabinets in my opinion have no place in a kitchen! kitchens should be bright and cheerful. the cabinets in my kitchen some are white, some are light wood color. dark colors like dark brown or red or dark blue will make it seem smaller in there. go with light colors, or white.

For some reason guys seem to like dark colors....restful to them I think. My hubby always jokes about having a room painted black with black curtains and football stuff everywhere for his place of relaxation. How dreary! I think your dad will just get use to it....he will have to since they are painted already! LOL Pick up any home decor magazine in the store and most of what you will see are the brighter colors. Still, he may not care..but he will eventually get over it! :)hope this helps!
