First and foremost, people forget that Hong Kong is a port. A very important port for a long period of time, that's why the British value Hong Kong. It is strategically located in the ancient shipping route that travels thru to Singapore & the west.

Because of this, you will find many export orientated business such as the garment industry springing up in mainland China.

Hong Kong is also one of the financial centers of Asia along with Tokyo. Althought the Chinese government have been trying to grow Shanghai into the next financial capitol of Asia replacing Hong Kong (they resent the fact that HK was made into what it is today by the British), I still feel that it will take another 10 years to replace the importance of HK in Asia.
