If so, can you give me some history about the place? I know it's located near the Castle in Bunratty (sp). Was it orginally a brothel? Please tell all details if you know. Thanks.

It's Dirty Nellie's, its a great pub, in bunratty co. clare. It's good craic and it is the oldest pub in Ireland.

It was never a brothel, you can see on the old drawings of the castle and grounds that it was there in those times it was a pub for the guards working in the castle.

So never a brothel

I haven't been to Durty Nellie's but I do know that it's not the oldest pub in Ireland because I live 2 miles down the road form the REAL oldest pub in Ireland (loo bridge) about 10 miles on the Cork side of Killarney. It's was issued the first pub licence in Ireland and was there before they brought in the licensing.

And no it wasn't originally a brothel

Its a nice pub a bit touristy but ok.

By the way Durty Nellies is not the oldest pub in ireland, that honour falls to Sean's Bar on the county Roscommon side of Athlone town which dates as far back as 900AD making it the oldest pub in the country. The Brazen Head in Dublin dates from 1200AD and was originally thought to be the oldest until Guinness book of records did some research on both and found Seans to be some 300 years older than Brazen head

I love Durty Nellies. It was always a pub. You can find old pictures of the castle and see it was a pub way back. If you go there and Liz is still a barmaid there, say hi to her.

Yes! My mom and I spent (2) wonderful nights there when we visited Ireland last April. Yes "Durty" is the correct spelling also. We had great food, great Guinness (spelling) and great company! I want to go back again soon!
