It's your average speed that counts, If you could maintain 70mph for the whole of your journey then you would get there quicker, but as you will be held up at junctions ,traffic lights and tailbacks although your speed may have reached 70 in places what is your average?the slower driver may not have met so many holdups as you and could quite well equal if not better your journey time. The other factor to consider is that the faster you drive the more accident prone you are as response times are reduced by speed and the 40 driver could well arrive and you did not arrive at all,.Your mum is right. Even if you save a minute or two is it worth taking that extra risk which could cause a lot of grief to your mum and anybody else involved..

Of course you will. If you were going on a 50 mile trip and could average 70mph you would take 43 minutes, a person averaging 40mph would take 75 minutes. However you will have difficulty legally averaging 70mph!!

It depends...are you driving through town? If so then 70 mph gets you to the next traffic light more quickly, but the 40 mph people will tend to catch up to you before the light changes.

70 mph increases your chance of a wreck, and increases the chances the wreck will be fatal...

Try driving the speed limit..as much of a drag as they are sometimes, they are posted to be considered a safe speed considering the road conditions and local area (cross streets, business with people entering and exiting the road) etc.

As the driving motto in FL says "Arrive Alive"

Of course you will but in my experience whenever you wnat to drive fast and get somewhere quickly you will always get stuck behind an OAP, Sunday driver, dust cart, bus, horse, cycle and so on. If you want to pootle along at 40mph nothing ever seems to get in the way!!

Duffer try to understand what your mother wants to tell you. Its not your speed its your life which she is talking about. You do not know how it is to live with one leg or one eye or one arm or without legs. Living a disabled life is miserable. Your speed might not kill you but not listening to your mother might come as a God's wrath on you. Do as she says and you will never repent in your life time. Take my words for it.

Dude if you travel at 80mph you can theoretically visit two places within the same time scale! Result. Or on the other hand the sooner your there the sooner your back, then on to yahoo answers! Double result!

My mother used to say something like "the quick and the dead" never understood it but she was right about speed. Think about the story of the tortoise and the hare.

I don't have a problem with how fast your vehicle moves so long as it has two wheels. Then, should the worst happen,
chances are it will be just you that is hosed off the tarmac.

Yeah you will but your mum would prefer you to go 40 and arrive safely. She will be worrying about you speeding.
