Because the theistic religions believe in at least one god - atheism has none.

I'm pagan and I find atheism more acceptable than the Christian death cult. Heck, I find atheism more acceptable than any religious expression, my own included. The detached analytical thinking is groovy to me. I've met too many other pagans who were nuts, megalomaniacs, total dorks, or seeking a different dogmatic doctrine. I think I would actually prefer agnostics, as they seek to understand and think the matters of the spirit may actually exist. Most atheists I've 'spoken to' don't even consider spirituality useful in an archetype, universal human psychological expression way. But, I'd trust them first in many other regards.

Not any more acceptable than Atheism. It is a personal preference.
I do wonder though, for all the talk about Theists being crazy... how many Atheists have Crazy Friends?

Cuz at least they are going in the right direction. The first step I guess is just believeing in an ivisible being. They can get you to convert from there. But to totally deny a supreme being just means you are overtaken by the DEVIL! You aren't even trying to find god. (I am an Atheist, but this is how I see them viewing it).

No not really. I think that when people are that religious-they only believe in their own and frown upon what anyone else thinks.

Irrationality likes bedfellows, they feel they have more in common. Less threatening.
