The calendar is based on the earth's orbit around the sun. Christmas is not the actual day Jesus was born but rather a day desgnated to remember that event. The two things are unrelated.

The years does not start on Christmas Day due to the fact that nobody actually knows that date of Jesus' birth, apart from it was supposedly in early spring.
Christmas day used to be a Pagan festival, and was invented to try and help the pagans convert to Christianity.
After Cromwell removed King Charles the 1st of England during the English Civil war, he ordered that Christmas was not to be celebrated. I gather that this was upheld until Charles the 2nd became King, then Christmas was re-instated.
As to why the 1st of January is New Years day I do not know why.

Because that isn't the exact date of Jesus birth in a manger. But Xmas is a time we celebrate Gods gift to us and also giving gifts to others.

Jesus was born at the time the Shepherds were in the field watching for the first born sacrificial lamb.

Per many clues in the Bible, it has been determined that Jesus was born in the spring. December 25th was chosen later on as the date to celebrate his birth.

Per astronomical cycles of the moon, the year starts on January 1st.

One has nothing to do with the other.

(FYI, the 365 day calendar as we know it did not exist yet during the time of Jesus' life.)

He wasn't born on Christmas, he was born around April/May. In the Gospel of Luke we read that "in the sixth month" Mary became pregnant, but the Jews used a different calendar. Their sixth month was near our month of August, so grant nine months of pregnancy and the birth should be in April or May. His birth was chosen to be celebrated on Dec 25th during the reign of Constantine to reflect pagan celebrations of the "birth of the un-conquered sun" and Saturnalia. By having the Christian holiday around the time of the pagan holiday, he hoped to influence them that way. Thus grant nine months before Christmas and the conception day of Christ was traditionally March 25th, which started the year in many places, including Italy, England and America which started their calendar on the traditional conception day of Christ. The Gregorian calendar changed the year's beginning to January 1st, a day when the Romans would enter their elected office.

Yahushua was born in late summer/fall for we know of the herding schedule.

During Roman times they wanted to hide this time so they merged the holiday with an already standing holiday by the pagans, dec. 25th.

Since then, tradition has been followed and the real reason and meaning has been lost. Few Christians realize this. Let alone the origins of easter, easter egg, cross, etc.

This is not hate, this is not bashing, this is fact. Even the bible tells us not to worship such items nor take them with us. Yet many have ignored this simple command.

According to the plants and flowers described around the time of his birth in the Bible, Jesus was born in June/July. The Dec 25 date is the creation of religion. Now that the Corporate World has gotten their teeth into Christmas, who knows what;'s next.

Why would the year start with Jesus' birth???
Christmas was originally a day to worship the pagan Gods, have sex, and get drunk.
Then the priests came along and said, well you need Jesus, so since you like celebrating on this day, we'll just give it a new name and purpose.
And then Christianity caused the Roman Empire to fall.
