I don't think that it is a religion any more than the "off" button on a remote control is a tv channel.

It is a philosophy that addresses religious deities as non-existent, unlike any religion. Other than this, it is not united by any other doctrine or belief, though many atheists are also Skeptics or Secular Humanists.

Atheism could be classified as a secular belief. It is simply the disbelief in anything supernatural. In other words, atheists believe that reality can be explained entirely through empirical, scientific knowledge.
Although atheism is defined as the disbelief of the supernatural, it is actually a belief. Most often it is associated with some sort of secular ideology such as humanism.
Therefore the best classification for atheism is a secular belief.

I pee in your general direction.

What does the belief that fairies are responsible for masinals come under? Not only does it lack a category, it doesn't even have a name.

Let's start giving names to all beliefs before we worry about classifying them, shall we?
