You do not have to touch a dog to train him, with the exception of things like putting a leash on him -- and a few certain commands such as "Don't Touch" in which negative reinforcement is necessary. Dogs are not people. Most commands can be taught using the dog's natural behavior to condition him. For example, it is ridiculous and unnecessary to push a dog's haunches down to "teach" him to sit. He already knows how to sit down. What you want is to condition him to sit at your command. All you have to do is hold his food bowl or a morsel of food above him. He will wag his tail or hop around in anticipation. You just stand there for a moment and he will soon NATURALLY sit down, looking at you. (What else is he going to do, as long as the food is just out of his reach? He KNOWS you have food for him, so he certainly isn't going to run off.) The instant he sits down, you say "Sit" and give him the food. 20 or 30 repetitions of this and he will be conditioned to sit on command. Even a puppy as young as 7-8 weeks can do this. My APBT was sitting on command at that age.
Look for training programs or manuals that use natural methods to train your dog.

I wish you had given some info about what breed you have & it's age so I could give you the best info but here goes: Richard A Wolters wrote 3 books that to me are the best training tools I have ever used & I been using them since 1975. They are: Family Dog, Gun Dog & Water Dog. They are written in such a way that they aren't just a dry instruction tome but will make you laugh & cry if you love dogs like I do. Good luck!!

You need to remember a Dog is more likely to respond to Kindness over angst....Training is about the dog trusting you. When you say training, you should specify potty training or basic obediance training, or is it behaviorial training?? There are many aspects to training that the solitary word does nothing alone...How old is the dog is it a puppy?? your question is to vast to limit the answer... If your lookingto potty train Crate is your bst bet.. it isnt cruelty..a dog is clean by rstricting him to a crate during the day he learns to hold it, then when you take him out take him outside... Right after your Puppy eats place him outside walking him untul he goes then by praising him..this is known as positive reinforcement...
For Sitting... Say the Command "Sit" and press lightly upon the haunches forcing them down, say "Good Dog" and repeat several times then by giving a treat..dont get frustrated it takes time...Positive reinforcement gets you further...
Dogs have limited vocabulary People often make the mistake of saying "sit down" which is technically two commands and can confuse the training they only hear the Sit and then the down and ill often do the one you are not asking... Sit and down should remain as seperate commands...
Down- Hold a treat to nose and guide the dog downwards saying "Down" when Down is executed reward..soon the dog learns to associate...
Heeling, Keep the dog to your side restricting the leash should the dog Pull give on firm tug with a tone of "Heel" as the Dog begins responding more and more givee more length to leash....if the dog turns to bolt draw in the leash "Heel" repeat until he learns...
There are various methods no matter which you choose that works always keep a positive reinforcement but a ton, Dogs are pack animals they have to establish a pecking order seeing you solely as the "Pack Leader"

You can either pay for classes at Petsmart for $99 + tax for eight weeks (once a week). Which is really good.. I'm still doing that with my puppy and its worth it.. or you can go to WWW.PETFINDER.COM.. they have great tips for training a dog!!! The most important one is to have A LOT OF PACIENCE!!!
Good Luck!!

when you are training them be patient and dont scream because then they just get scared and lose focus. To teach them tricks and etc. use the same voice tones and don't be too loud. Also, you can use hand signals to help them and maybe show them examples of sit down( for an example when teaching them to jump say jump and then jump). If this doesn't work keep trying, and before you know it they'll get it down. Good luck!

*use treats to reward him
*dont use treats ALOT! but use affection
* train him in a playful way in 2 15 minute periods a day and play with him afterward so its fun for them and you!
* set up a schedule to train them (especialy potty training!)
*go to your local library and get books on training!
*and love is the best treat!
