What do I know without doing research (it's a broad question, but I'll see what I can think of):
-Capital is Manila
-Rice Terraces are a famous attraction and UNESCO World Heritage sight
-It's an island archipelago
-Tagalog is the language of the people
-It's a former Spanish, American, and Japanese colony/territory
-Many of the women who are sex traficked come from the Philippines (that's a sad truth)
-Tinikling is the national dance of the Philippines
-The economy is mainly based on agriculture

As for your other questions:

My views on the nation are mainly positive. The government definitely isn't perfect, though.

Yes, I would like to travel there someday if I get the opportunity!
