Very hard. I would definitely stay out of the city and just take the train in. Long Island has some motels you could probably get for 500-600/week and take the LIRR in. Also you could stay in Jersey and take the PATH. Good luck.

Radio City Apartments on West 49th Street. The Rockefeller Centre at one end and Times Square at the other. Handy for the subway. Rooms are pretty basic but if you're anything like us you won't spend a lot of time there anyway! And for that location the price is absolutely fantastic, we met people staying miles out who were paying more than we were.

The Pennsylvania is quite cheap, and just a few blocks from Time Square
Also, the Edison is a good cheap central hotel too
If you're not fussy you could try Hostels?

You might want to try a hotel in New Jersey and just take the PATH to the city. You can save oodles of money that way. I did that exact thing and had plenty of extra to shop and enjoy the food and sights.

My buddy, in case you do not concepts using the subway to and from Queens, might i opt to recommend the l. a. Quinta hotel on fortieth St and Queens Blvd. Rooms there choose for $a hundred a nite. The hotel is steps from fortieth St station on the #7 subway line.

Check out hostels or hosted (shared) apartments. There are always a bunch on craigslist. I came across this site recently... nycvacationstays.com
