I like to think of chi (ki) as simply energy. Energy can be focused and given direction so 'inner' energy can also be focused and given direction. Chi can also be static and can be stagnant. Its energy so it can be kinetic or potential in form. Potential that is never released is stagnant. Kinetic that is never focused is dissipated. Stagnant and dissipated are not useful.

When it comes to say chi in your arms, then its like a hose. When the chi (water) is flowing, its hard to bend the hose. When the chi (water) isn't flowing, its easy to bend the hose.

The problem is that the visualizing of the hose is the effect of the flow of chi rather than the cause. Its more like you get the chi flowing and then it seems like a hose. Its not like you visualize the hose and then bam! the chi starts to flow.

I'd consider playing around with your body a bit until you feel like a hose - that feeling is the result of chi flowing - energy flowing. All you can do is keep trying until you get that feeling.

That's how it is for me anyway. Took me years to finally experience that feeling. Now I can tell the difference between the two and can control it on demand.... when I think about it consciously. Hopefully, I'll learn to control it without conscious thought given enough time.

I think the same thing will happen to you - just make sure you have the horse before the cart.... put the feeling before the visualization. Keep changing the feeling until the visualization you are looking for actually describes the feeling you have. If the feeling doesn't fit the visualization, change the feeling until it does fit.

"energy flows where awareness goes" if you focus very hard on one spot in your body you can quickly start to feel a tingling there. This is chi. This is the fastest way i know to learn to do it, but focusing like that is tiring.

Taichi and chigong work by practicing gentle relaxed movement - the more relaxed you are the easier the chi flows. This takes longer, but i think it takes you further.

focussing on your lower belly is also good - this is the source of the energy in your body. It all flows out from there.

the holding a ball visualisation is for after you have the chi flowing out through your hands. That is what you are supposed to do with it once it is outside your body.

Chi has an energy flow all around the body. You focus your chi to the tips of your fingures, the palms of your hand, and your arms to throw a powerful punch
