The most responsible thing to do is to say Hey I dont want this to ruin our friendship but I do want you to know that I have feelings for you and would like to give us a shot. And if he says no at least you will know that it wasnt meant to be and you will still have your friendship.

Just be yourself and ask how do he feels about you and if he says he has feelings take it from there. Don't be shy open up . GOOD LUCK!!! P.S. Three years ain't that bad

ask him out. life's too short to wonder, then a few years later when he admits that Yes, he did like you, you'll think, "oh, i should have asked him out then, then we could have had so much more time together." and then you'll feel sad.
