I've finally decided on getting a lab for hunting and companionship... is it too much to handle to get two brothers? or should I train one, wait a year or two and get another...i want my lab to not be so alone when im away at work...plus i think it would be cool to have a black one and a white one to compliment him.

I have a black lab. I call him Jack. He is still considered young 2 years old. He has much life in him however you must understand they are hard to handle until they get somewhat older. I hope you have enough strength and energy for two because one is a handful. I will say this they are devoted to you and family but their play is rough where small children are concerned unless you have them trained.
Like any pet you must have the upper hand .
For sometime Jack ruled the household and he got lots of pleasure from that but they have to know who is boss and play by the rules. Jack was easy to teach things to
which made much of my time spent with him easier. Like any dog they love tissue, paper towels and paper in general. Have toys available for them. Our dog likes veggies, some fruits, salads, cottage cheese and much more. My vet gave me approval on all these things. Good luck and you will not be sorry getting a Lab.
Should you choose one leave a radio on for them when you are away.

If you want to lose your sanity, pull your hair out, and possibly wind up being an alcoholic then sure go ahead! :o) Seriously though I would not recommend getting two Labs at one time to anyone unless you have someone to help you. My husband and I bought a Lab puppy three years ago and we still don't know how we made it through the puppy years. First of all crate training him was a nightmare. He would cry all night long so we would wind up sleeping next to him on the floor. Then we were told that if we crate trained him that he would potty train easier and that he would not go in his crate but that was a BIG lie!!! He would poop in his crate 2-3 times a day. When we got him we had just built a brand new home that we had only been in for 3 weeks. He chewed off the window seals, he chewed holes in the dry wall, he chewed up a ink pen on the new carpet, and not to mention pulling up the carpet. We put baby gates around the house and he chewed his way through them. I am telling you all of this because it is very easy to get sucked in to buying puppies especially two. So be careful. Just know what your in for. There is a reason G-d made them so cute. Our Lab is now over 3 years old and he is a GREAT dog and I wouldn't trade him for anything but just know that it takes about two and a half years to get to that point. Good luck.

I would advise against it. More work, they tend to pick up each others bad habits, harder to train two at once. One big thing to consider is why would they need to bond with you when they have each other?? If you do get two at once don't get the same sex. Because they are about the same size, the same sex, and the same age, when they get older they may fight for dominance over each other! As a dog trainer I have seen it many many times! If it were me, I would get one, wait a year or two, then get a puppy. Then the older one can help train the puppy, and the older one still has enough energy to keep up with the pup.

I think you'll be fine getting two. You sound like a very compitant owner and I think you'd do well raising two. It might be difficult at first, but you'll do great! Good luck making your decision and raising your 1 or 2 new dogs!!

Having 2 litter mates can work very good as long as they aren't both males as they can get very aggressive towards one another even if neutered. Sometimes it will work but I would advise against it. If you select to have a male & female you should of course have them neutered/spade.

it is fine to get them on the same day. since they are puppies they should get along, they might play fight here and there, but it should be fine. it would be even better if you got the puppies from the same breeder that way they would be familiar w/ eachother. Good Luck!

Getting litter mates is a great idea! It will be challenging but if one learns a new behavior the other will follow shortly. I think its great!

They'll have a better bond if you raise them at the same time. However, it may be easier on you to raise one at a time.
