What sort of assistance is required?
Or is the issue perhaps the opposite: is a nappy/catheter needed because the individual can't help themselves from going?

By unaided I meant without equipment, obviously they need a carer to do everything else. Presumably the intestinal-muscles are like the heart muscle: the food is pushed through without any instruction from the brain, but ordinarily the brain tells the lower bowel & sphincter when to evacuate. Without the nerve connection the sphincters are always relaxed?

there are several methods used on indivduals who are paralised to maintain there tolieting needs. either they are cathorised which could ba super pubic cathator a tube which comes out the lower belly or indwelling cathetor which goes either into the penis or uethra for women both theses are connected to a tube which allows the urine to collect into a leg bag. clostromy bags which can be either for faecal or urine in some cases both these bags sit on the side of the lower stomach. Sheaths which are very like condoms but have a tube attached to the end which leads down to a leg bag where urine is collected. There are other methods also.
Regarding bowels from the people i have cared for none have worn a pad as they cant manage to pass there own faeces so manual evacutions are carried out using suppostoiries either by a nurse or trained carer. So accidents are very rare as they how no abilty to pass a motion as all feelings are lost and they is no sensation to push. This does not mean it is the same for others pads may be worn.
The persons tolieting needs depends on the client and what they feel the is best for them in managing there tolieting needs and which is less embrassing in some cases.Do they still work etc. And also medical reasons taken into account.

If they are paralised from the neck down then they don't get the feeling that they need the toilet so a catheter will be used.as for defecateing usually an enenama is given a couple of times a week.

Quadriplegics are incontinent of bowel and bladder functions. Some have indwelling foley catheters to collect their urine others do not. They usually wear a disposable brief that has to be changed by their caregiver frequently. Skin care crucial because of the acidic waste products and can breakdown skin and cause sores.

Quadraplegics do not have control over bowel and bladder function. They are incontinent of because there is no communication between the brain and the nerves that serve these organs.

No, they are doubly incontinent. They usually often need to be manually evacuated with the faeces, as walking is one of the things we need to do in order not to become constipated. They are not usually catheterised as this can lead to problems with urinary tract infections and yes they usually wear a nappy.

They can do it unaided - as for where and when that's a different matter.
It would just come out whenever it was ready.
