I feel I have to be an atheist, and can't really imagine that it is wrong. It is sometimes fun to imagine what heaven would be like, but it is so phantasmical as to just reaffirm my atheism.
There are also some interesting beliefs that fall within atheism. The Gaia theory allows creation of a super-consciousness here on earth which is human based. (funny, it looks like God to us but is not). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_Hypothesis
Also reincarnation does not necessarily require a God. However if all aspects of my life end here I'm good with that. I just want to make my life as perfect and useful as I can. I hope my body becomes fish food when I die.

Well I'm certainly okay with the idea that SOMEONE will rot in a box while bugs eat their corpse. Where do you get off grandstanding on such pointlessly emotive language?
I probably wonder if my beliefs are wrong as often as any other person does. This includes theists and atheists. Anyone who says that they are certain is either self-deluded or lying.
But good luck on the ascension of your uncorrupted body - I think it shows a healthy ego.

No. You see, I have no reason to. I'm not afraid of death and I simply become nothing in the end. I have no reason to fear that I'll end up in heaven (where you bask in the glory of a selfish god for eternity so that he can think he's wonderful) or hell (where you're tortured for eternity).
There's a certain comfort in knowing that my family is never really gone because yes, those bugs will eat their bodies, then other little animals will eat the bugs, and my family will pass through to the life of the rest of the world. Their death will help other life continue its existance.
Why would I wish I was wrong and live my entire life terrified I did something to piss off my god that I didn't know to apologize for and he'll toss me into hell to burn for eternity?
To echo, the poster below me... its the cycle of life. And its not a bad thing. YOU are a part of the cycle of life, whether you like it or not, and there is no loftier purpose than that.

Everyone (who is not cremated) will just rot while bugs eat their corpses.
The difference is that I don't believe any part of me is separate from my body.
Am I OK with thinking my father no longer exists except in me and in his contributions to the world? Yes.
Atheists can technically believe in an afterlife and any number of other supernatural concepts, save one - belief in a god.
Would I wish for a Heaven? My ideal fantasy afterlife would be that I could live as long as I liked, do what I liked, without pain or displeasure, and end it when I got bored.
Does that make it real? Certainly not.
Do I question myself, my views, and my beliefs? Constantly. That's what made me an atheist... though I think you are referring to skeptics, a subset of nontheistic worldviews.

I wonder if I'm wrong almost daily. I constantly search my mind, books and ask other people (a la Yahoo answers) for ways in which my thinking may have gone wrong. (I rarely encounter believers who do the same).
I am not too worried about what may happen when I die. I suspect it will be a lot like how things were before I was born (that wasn't a bad thing as far as I remember).
Anyway, even if I didn't like the idea of dying, it would not make any of the believers ideas about God or religion correct.

You gave "rot in a box while bugs eat your corpses" a very negative connotation. It seems to me you are biased. And who cares? We'll be dead. Unconscious. Death marks the end of life, why would there be more to that after?

Og burn on pyre like Viking ancestors. Not really care where ashes go - maybe ashes rain down a little bit on Maria Menounos's cleavage. That heaven!
Og pretty sure all talk of afterlife is speculation. Plenty or room for doubt, no room for certainty. Will Og get a better job spending time in doubt today? Og think no.
Happy hunting.

I was Atheist for a bit. I still am, in a way. But when I was Atheist I had no doubt. Religion was simply incorrect (I still believe that to a certain extent) and I had no problem if my body rotted in the ground because by then it's no longer my problem.

Honestly I would prefer some kind of afterlife. I like me a whole lot and I wish that in the end I didn't have to not exist.
Sadly though, wanting something to be true does not make it true. I have no reason whatsoever to believe in an afterlife and don't waste time idly "wondering" if there is.

I don't care about my corpse. I won't be conscious of it. It's a body. All that matter is the brain while it's working. Once it's dead, it's dead. Part of the cycle. And I don't really wonder if I'm wrong about ym views on Christianity. I am still searching for the answers outside of that, though, and always will be. It's the meaning of life. Experiencing things, using logic to understand those experiences, and then dying.
