You must understand that the whole LA area is very urbanized now, and that campgrounds just can't survive here unless they are run by the state, county, or federal government. The land is just too expensive.
There are a limited number of campgrounds, but I think your best bet is to camp on Catalina at Two Harbors.
-Bolsa Chica State Beach has some RV sites, but I don't think that they will rent to tent campers. In any case, you are essentially in a parking lot at the beach. Cool if you have an RV, not so cool for tents. See www.reserveabmerica.com for availability.
-A bit further south, you have Newport Dunes. However, that's VERY expensive, and there are a lot of rules. I checked out a tent site, and it's $64 per night. That's almost the price of a cheap hotel room. Plus, you can't use stakes, etc, etc. You can check it out at www.newportdunes.com.
-A bit to the north, you have Dockweiler Beach, which is run by the county of LA on one part, and the state on another. On the county section, you can RV camp, but no tent camping.
-For the closest tent camping, you either have to go to Doheney State Beach to the south (Dana Point), or Leo Carillo State Beach to the north (Malibu). Both can be viewed at www.reserveamerica.com.
-The campground at Two Harbors on Catalina is $12 per person per night. It's 1/4 mile from the village and docks, an easy walk. If you want to travel light, you can rent a tent cabin. Check it out at http://www.visitcatalinaisland.com/twoHarbors/camp_twoHarbors.php.
Have fun!

i don't know where you are coming from but i don't think there are any camping areas in long beach ca. but if you go to Catalina from Newport beach, ca there in Newport is Newport dunes and up the coast is Huntington state beach or bolsa chica state beach and i believe they both have camping but it is mostly if not all RV camping no tents. I know i have tent camped at Newport dunes but that was years ago. You can look up http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=21491 and then look up Orange or Los Angeles county to see if there is something close.

Bolsa Chica or Huntington Beach area-camp in 'concrete' but it's right on the beach. I don't think Disneyland has campground.
