Who thinks a phone should just be a phone? plaese read my rant and tell me what you think about todays phones.

Question

You get a new phone right, use the camera for a few days, use the mp3 for about a week till you see it's too small and the same song keeps repeating over and over (and you more then likely already have an mp3 of some kind) and then you realise that having all these bits and bobs on it just makes it the size of a brick in you pocket!? Who agrees with me that there is just no point in having these things put on your phone as it is a phone and not a part of batman’s utility belt?

Can I extend that rant to devices in general? This is like the 1980's when they started putting digital clocks on everything -- can openers, fridges, coffee makers, you name it -- because it was easy to do. The end result was that everybody's house was filled with flashing 12:00's because nobody could be bothered to set clocks all over the place. The manufacturers finally learned and stopped doing it. The gizmo manufacturers of the new millenium are doing the same thing now, only now they're putting in cameras that take crappy pictures and music players with limited functions that only make the phone harder to use. Eventually, consumers will push back (hopefully) and say that they just wanted a phone.
And what? You didn't get GPS on your phone? Time to upgrade, dude.

Whoa up Jason what are you trying to do. You have just put yourself right at the top of the Capitalist Retail Advanced Promotion ( CRAP) hit list. Mobile phones that only make phone calls, that's almost like having a car that will only do the speed limit. How the hell are the billionaires going to get their next Mercedes MclLaren and private jet if you carry on like that. You need the latest gadgets you need MP3 you need a 24 mega pixel camera you need Windows Vista OK maybe not Windows Vista but you get the idea. Go out and buy something new immediately, to make up for your crimes against the Millionaires. And tomorrow when you get up watch out for men in bowler hats and suits with poison umbrellas. Lets be careful out there.

If I didn't need a phone for work I wouldn't use a mobile EVER! I don't use the thing except to text hubby when he's abroad. I have one now that has a camera and video (bought as a gift) but apart from messing with it initially it's a waste! I keep it switched off as much as possible! I really like my privacy! You should meet a friend of ours! He buys a new phone every few months and I'm waiting to see what the next one is capable of doing! If they ever make one that can do ALL the housework then I might change my mind! Other-wise I'll join you in the rant!

Jason, I'm with you. I use my phone just to receive and make calls. I have the little tools and stuff (which I rarely use), on it, like games and calculator, but it does not have a camera or mp3 in it.

My husband wants me to get a phone with all that stuff, like his---blackberry, camera, mp3, pda, so I don't have to carry my pda, and camera along. (I don't have an mp3). Phone cameras don't have the megapixels to print 4x6, mp3 doesn't have the space to fill so much more music. I told him I'm fine with what I have and I don't want to add my phone into the landfill. Doesn't having all that extra power needed stuff use up battery life quicker? If, and when, (and have) lost or misplace my phone, that'll also mean I've also lost my pda and camera. So what if I have 3 items instead of just 1 in my purse? They're all pretty compact anyway!

I've have the same mobile number for over 5 years, and am on my second phone. First one just crapped out. Husband is on like his 4th or 5th. He has had his mobile phone less than I have. (He gave me his first mobile phone, so he can sign up with another carrier).

But as you say, the novelty soons wears off with all those extras...

I agree with you about the mp3 player thang and all that. I quite like having a phone on my camera for those funny occasions when you 'just wish you had a camera on you'. Dont like the fact that horrible little teenagers use it to film themselves beating up some poor old pensioner.
I use mine for phoning and texting and nothing else although i do have a top of the range phone.
When you have so many functions on your phone, its more things to go wrong with it...as mine quite often does.. turning itself off and shutting itself down cos it cant handle the pressure.. has a kind of mobile mental break down!
I guess the thing is that if you want a pphone like that then just get one.. but if you like all the gadgets and gismo's then its good that there is an option!
But people feel that they have to get the latest phone available just to fit in the the jones's!

Definite agreement here. Besides, you also pay for all these features that you do not use. I recently bought a phone and had the devil of a time trying to find one that did not cost an arm and a leg (or at least a few toes) because almost all phones on the market have internet capabilities - trying to explain to the sales personnel that I wanted a phone to make phone calls and not surf the internet was like trying to convince a lion to be completely vegetarian - very puzzling and not entirely welcome!

Besides a phone I use it for 3 other features. Programing about 150 #s into it, so I don't have to call info at $1.50 a shot. Most numbers I may just call 4 or 5 times a year, but why give information money to cell phone company. That's a big rip-off. I set timer on it maybe once a week to beep at a certain time to remind me of something. And lastly, I use ringback tones (6 songs) just to aggravate people who call me. They have to listen to MY music before I pick up. Anything else on phone I don't need except caller ID.

If i were you i'd only worry about using a phone as a phone however, sometimes when i'm out and about i'd see and advert or someone gives me information and i take a picture or take notes for later on to use. Most phones nowadays are not the 'size of a brick in your pocket' as you put it. Some phones have specialist uses ie, phones, music, pictures etc.

Exactly. I agree with you 100%. There isn't much choice for people who want to buy a phone to just make phone calls on (Heaven Forbid). You have to buy all the other crap that comes with it. A simple phone with easy to use buttons and a memory for about 25 numbers is all you need. Job done.

I haven't got a mobile as I don't even see the point of having the phone; let alone all of the gadgets as well. If you are a business person then maybe, but all of these little twerps phoning their mates on the bus etc. is beyond me.
