I will be doing an internship with a local police department this summer. I have had to sign about 5 waivers now and I am starting to get concerned. I will be working in their office but I will also be doing a substantial amount of ride alongs with officers. Due to the potential hazards of doing a ride along, should I get a ballistic vest? I am asking here instead of at the internship site as I do not want them thinking I am a gung-ho out of control type or super paranoid, I am sort of both but I do not want them to know just yet. Thanks.

Yeah I know about the auxilliaries killed in NYC, but one of them was wearing a vest that he purchased himself, so that doesnt really ease my mind.

Heard any good news lately? 2 New York City Auxillary Officers (untrained Cop wanabes) were responding to a disturbance at a pizza parlor and started chasing a suspect down the street. Little did they know, the man had just killed the owner of the pizza place and wounded others. If you watch the video, the second cop realized he goofed when he see's the first cop shot dead in front of him and attempts to run away. can't outrun a bullet. both killed.

Ride alongs at our department are issued vests for the day. All depends on the agencies policy. Have fun out there... be safe... learn.

P.S. If you feel safer with one on then ask for one. I wouldnt fault you for be cautious and they shouldn't either.
