Crack cocaine is derived from the coca leaf that is found in South American countries such as Peru and Argentina. The coca leaf was originally chewed for energy boost and gave the energy equivalent of a cup of coffee. A European scientist did coca leaf studies and extracted the energy producing liquid ingredient which was named cocaine. Crack cocaine is simply its powder form.

Educated and powerful men used it casually. Finally realizing the danger of cocaine, the American government banned it and several other drugs with the Harrison Drug Act.
