Well, I have worked for a town library, helped with an elementary school, help out at my church's AWANA, you can always ask the town office if there are any community service jobs. I hope this helps you in some way.

If you are doing this for the requirement of high school graduation, you can ask your guidance counselor before you do something.
There are many things that you can do for your community, you can teach pre-school kids, clean a park, collect some clothes for charity, collect some money for donation or make a campaign against non-humanities (racism, discrimination etc.)
Try to talk with your guidance counselor, she may help you a lot and be a volunteer to your city council and they may bring you a task to do.
If you're not doing it for the high school requirement, well, you are a very nice person seeing that many people barely ever make community service as a volunteer; but you can do all the things that I mentioned above too.

There are a variety of things you can do. It all depends upon your interests. You can make the most impact in your community doing things that you like to do. Your volunteer center can help you find specific community projects and non-profit agencies in your local area to help you make an impact in your community.
Here are some links to help you get started:

Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the library, enrich arts and culture by helping visitors at the local museum, work at the local food bank, children's shelter, and clean our neighborhoods, parks, and beaches. There's a lot more of different stuff that your volunteer center can help you find in your local area.
Good luck!

Some suggestions:
1. Help at a homeless shelter. (usually distributing food)
2. Help at a senior center or nursing home (reading and talking with nursing home residents is appreciated).
3. Animal lover? Help at an animal shelter (cleaning cages, walking dogs, etc.)
4. Help at a hospital. (Help patients at registration, guiding patients to areas for tests, helping families during surgeries, etc.)
5. Help with clean ups along river banks and highways usually during Earth week.
6. Do you like working with your hands? Volunteer at a local Habitat for Humanity Home project.
If you pass a background check, you can help at local public libraries with children.
If you are patient and like to teach, you can help adults learn to read. It's called ProjectLearn where I live. Your local public library may have more information.
Good luck.

Volunteer at a hospice, volunteer at a nursing home, volunteer at a soup kitchen, women's shelter, children's group home, Meals on Wheels, animal shelters, food pantry. You could also volunteer to devote some time cleaning up a cemetery. You don't have to sign up, you don't have to keep track, you just go and clean up some of the stones, clean away brush on the graves, things like that.

You could clean up the grass by the streets(They're ALWAYS dirty), or you could donate to needy people.
