I have had low back pain for the past 4 years. I want to go to a physician so that I can start physical therapy and look at other measures to help relieve the pain and hopefully find a way to stop it all together.

My question is: What kind of physician should I seek help from?

Start with your general practitioner. He/she can usually get an idea of who you need to see and perhaps what is causing the problem.
Many people think that chiropractors are miracle workers for this kind of thing - but that is NOT the place to start. Back pain can be caused by many things, ranging from minor muscle aches (which doesn't sound like your case) to bigger issues involving the spine and nerves in the spinal column. If the pain ever radiates down your leg that's a big sign of nerve symptoms and you should report that to your doctor as well. Chiropractors can cause serious damage if they work on you without knowledge of what exactly is going on in your back. A good chiropractor will tell you this up front, a bad one could seriously injure you. Chiropractic care may be a good idea for you, but you need to isolate the cause of your pain first.
Most insurance companies will require you start with your GP first anyway, and he or she is completely able to perscribe physical therapy, so you can get treatment started before you see a specialist (if you need one).

You should start by visiting your regular doctor. He/she can order tests like an MRI or CT scan and depending on the results, decide where to send you. (Based on my results I was sent directly to a neurosurgeon.) They can also refer you to a physical therapist or pain management clinic. Don't wait any longer. Four years of pain is too long. Best wishes.

Chiropractor! Also, many people do not realize that the abdominal muscles help stabilize the back (especially low back). One your get your pain down start working on those abs.

depending on the type of insurance you have you will probably have to see your family dr first. they will give you a referal to a specialist that deals with this kind of pain. i agree do not go to a chiropractor until you are seen by a specialist. if it is a big problem the chiropractor can really mess up your back

It does depend on your insurance greatly. If I could go anywhere without a concern, I'd go to an orthopedist. They are the specialist for that problem. I would like to have an MRI. Let them counsel you in reference to treatment after diagnostic tests are completed.
