Because a dog peed there first. Then another dog did to mark its scent, then another then another... now no dog can walk by without at least sniffing it.

dogs pee on stuff to mark territory and my personal opinion of why dogs usually do this on fire hydrants is because in the city there aren't a lot of trees for them to pee on so they go on the fire hydrants cause there are lots around. i live waayy outside a city and i walk my dog by a fire hydrant every time i take him out but he refuses to pee on the fire hydrant and goes strait to the tree a couple yards away because there are lots of trees and other stuff to pee on.

Marking Territory.

Because lots of other dogs have done it before them and they are marking their territory over the smell of the other dogs pee.

To preserve or fasten with a mechanical gadget: "Watertight doorways and hatches have been dropped into position and dogged all the way down to deliver the send complete watertight integrity" (Tom Clancy).

Well I used to have a dog, why they do this because maybe that is attractive to the fire hydrant scent. Oh also don't run while it's doing that. You would not want to know what will happen accept to imagine It running towards to and it puts its paws on you. YUCK!

Males like to lift their legs to pee on something. It marks their territory.

dogs pee in certian areas to claim territory. Its like leaving a message"Hey, I was here! This is my property"
