It's a lot easier to offer to help when you don't have to actually follow through with it, or deal with it every day. People always want to help in principle, but when it comes to actually spending time with the person every day and listening to their problems or whatever else then its not so easy, and most people back away fast. Telling someone you care when you meet them in passing, like on this site, takes a minute or two and then you're done. But supporting someone for real when they're going through sometime times a lot of time, and is usually emotionally draining. You have to keep giving time and energy, and often can't rely on that person for support in return. Most people have problems of their own to deal with, and a lot of the time they real do care about you, but they just can't deal with the extra emotional burden of trying to help you with your problems as well as dealing with their own even though they might want to help if they could.

If the friends you have don't care about you in your time of need, it's time to re-evaluate yourself and the kinds of people you're spending your time with. Time is precious, so spend it with people you know will be there for you and will support you no matter what you do. As far as what you said, I dont think that's true. When we find people we don't know who care about us, we feel as if we've been spending too much time with false friends when all the time the friendship we could've made is right there in front of us. Superficial people have a tendency to not care about you when times are really bad. We all have our shortcomings, but life has an interesting way of telling us how we need to change to become a better person.

Well, sometimes, strangers can seem to care more that your family does, or even people whom you know, and that's because they're less emotionally invested in you. Of course, if you are female, you have to be careful that this isn't a ruse to trick you into something you'd rather not be involved in. Also, it's easier to tell things to people who we don't know than those we do, for that same reason, and because we don't want those we do know to be thinking that we dislike them, or something of that nature..
as for whether or not they really care, that's something that only time will tell..

I guess it is because they are seeing things from an outside perspective and can judge more honestly than those who are involved in our lives.
I have found this too and they can genuinely care, shows me the world is not all bad.

some people may be nautrally more caring then others.people want to help others but sometimes it is just not possible. it may be a case of you are not me and i am not you, sometimes it is impossible for a person to know and understand what another person is going through

It's means they know you well enough to know you can care well enough for yourself. Just by asking this question proves that.

Strangers can assume that you are a decent human being. Those who know you know better. NO ONE is really 'decent'.
