lowering your air pressure in your 4x4 tires increases the traction and floatation of the tire and tread also it helps the tire to conform to the terrain on rock when you are crawling over them
but you have to be very careful not to slip the tire off the bead of the rim when hardcore 4x4ing it is a excellent advantage to air down when you leave the pavement to get hardcore but if you are just trail riding and not going bug-**** don't bother make sure you air back up before hitting the pavement always a good idea to buy a little 12 volt air compressor to do it so you don't have to drive on the road which is very hazardous with under-inflated tires

I would only suggest lowering pressure on certain terrain, for example deep sand or snow. This gives you more "float" over the surface. However, on some terrain you want to "bear down" to where the tire finds traction - thus a taller, narrower tire is preferred with full air pressure. This is hard to explain, unless you have some actual 4X4 experience.

It will improve traction on certain surfaces, such as sand, snow and ice, mud, very loose rock, etc. But lowering the air pressure will harm the tire on hard rocky surfaces. On mixed trails, which have both muddy areas and hard rock areas, only lower the tire pressure slightly.

If you have lowered the tire pressure and you come to jagged rocks, stop and increase the tire pressure back to manufacturer's recommendations. The main thing you want to avoid is a cut to the sidewall, which cannot be repaired.

Good 4X4 tires are expensive. Take good care of your's.

Primary advantage can be summed up with 3 words..... traction, traction, traction.

Lowering the tire pressure increases the size of the tire patch(the amount of tire surface that actually touches the ground).
the bigger the tire patch, the more hookup the tire will have, i.e. traction. It also allows the tire to flex around a more uneven surface and allows the sidewall cleats to grab more.

it gives you more traction man..look at it this way..blow up a balloon untill it almosts pops rub it on the carpet.. then let the air out of it so theres only a few breaths in it then rub that on the carpet.. you will see the difference
