Not knowing much about your situation I wouldn't want to give much of any advice. Hoping you been here a few time before, have someone here to help with translation problems, and know the rules for obtaining a visa. I do recommend you have a banking account in the USA with on line banking, a means to transfer funds here, i.e. ATM or money transfers, and adequate funds to open a bank account here in Thailand just for emergency cash in case you have some problem with your home bank, i.e. lost ATM card. Other wise, welcome to Thailand, hope you have a great retirement here.

You didn't mention of what you will be doing in terms of work in Thailand. My advice will be that you learn of thai cultures and do's or don'ts. Go to 'forum' of thai-related websites like:
http://www.bahtsold.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1
http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/
and you'll have some ideas of what's going on and might learn something especially from the point of views of expats communities in Thailand. Don't forget to check out the homepage of thaivisa.com. There're lots of helpful information that you may find useful to know before you even live there.

Hi - Well, your question is way too broad, but Nowhereman above has good advice on banking.. There are sacrifices to be made in working here as you might make less than in other Asian countries. I have a friend teaching English in Korea and he likes the lifestyle here much better but will have to take a substantial pay cut.. Even in Bkk, if you look around, there are reasonable places to rent - but I will not go in to details because I do not know what/which category you fall in to - backpacker, executive?? but feel free to contact me personally if you want anything specific as to advice or info.. this forum is also pretty good if you narrow down the questions.. good luck and welcome

the concept that private wealth creates jobs is stuffed with crap. Bush tax cuts in stress for better than a decade, the place are the roles? with the help of sheer info, the backside ninety% of individuals in any state produce extra call for than the right 10%. companies and persons do no longer hire human beings because of fact they have lots of money and are feeling beneficiant, they hire human beings because of fact they might desire to with a view to maintain or strengthen their salary. the way this works is with the help of customer call for. and not applying a huge sort of shoppers or in the event that they are not spending adequate, there is no longer adequate call for for companies to strengthen and hire extra. If clientele don't be in a position to pay for, no person expands. Take a lesson from Henry Ford. He paid human beings no longer in basic terms what they might take, he might have paid them plenty much less, yet he paid them adequate that they might have adequate money the automobiles they made, increasing call for.
