Don't use it on normal burns. Especially second and third degree burns. Mint oils can harm the tender skin. What the toothpaste remedy is probably referring to are 'nettle burns' which you get when walking through stinging nettles. It will also work for some other types of chemical burns, but don't use it unless you know it is the proper treatment.

YES! I picked up my curling iron by the hot end yesterday and burned every one of my fingertips and even my palm. I tried ice, water, aloe, sunburn aloe with lidocaine and nothing was taking the pain away. I was getting ready to go the ER when a friend told me to try toothpaste, as long as none of the blisters were burst open, which they were not, and it eased most of the pain within a few minutes! I kept the toothpaste on over night and when I woke up this morning I had no blisters and barley any pain. When I burned my hand, it felt like the worse pain I have ever had! Im so glad my friend told me about the toothpaste trick!

In the olden days people would use butter, flour, cucumber, tomato and toothpaste on a small burn. These would all exclude air so the burnt skin did not feel so painful but it's best to put cold water on the burn to stop it from spreading.

This Site Might Help You.
RE:
Toothpaste on a burn?
Hi.
Can anyone refer me to some sites that explain either why toothpaste is good for a burn (since it makes the stinging sensation go away) or why it's bad for your skin (for various reasons)?
Thanks.

WRONG!!! Creamy toothpaste, such as Crest, works great on first degree burns! Not sure about sunburns, but boiling water on hand, or touching a red-hot burner, or a hot pan - even hot glue... Gob it on and wait until the pain is gone - about 20 minutes or so, rinse off, and there will be no mark or pain!

that what you get for listening to those losers who say put toothpaste on your acne. you can get a tylenol mix it with a little water to form a paste and apply it as a mask and leave it on for about 30 minutes and do this for then next 3 days 2 times a day or less if its not that bad, youll see it dissappear and the redness as long as your acne will subside!!

Like my fellow EMTs and Paramedics said, use cool not cold water. Ointments and butter and old remedies have to be removed to properly treat the burn, which means painfull times ahead. No toothpaste!
