We are getting married on the beach. We would like to use the sand ceremony as part of the wedding. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a reading or wordings that go with this and does the officiant have to do this or can a friend do it??

Bride & Groom, today you are making a life-long commitment to share the rest of your lives with each other. Your relationship is symbolized through the pouring of these two individual containers of sand into one. One container of sand represents you, Bride, and all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be. The other container of sand represents you, Groom, and all that you were, all that you are and all that you will ever be. As each of you holds your container of sand, they represent your lives, up to this moment in time, as unique individuals. As you combine your sand together, your lives are joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured back into their respective individual containers; so shall your marriage be.

just fill in the names of people who are getting married, you can also change the wording a little to make it more personal or whatever but i thought this would give you a good base!

You'll have to ask the officiant for sure, but i believe anyone could do - just like if you would have someone read something some scripture or play a song etc...
GodBless!

There are MANY variations on what can and has been said Here are a couple:
[bride] and [groom], the sand in these jars symbolize your separate lives, separate families and separate sets of friends. I ask that each of you take one of the jars and that you fill the center jar together.
The individual sands represent your lives before today. The jar in the center represents that your two lives are now joined as inseperably as the sand within, and represents the joining of your two families and circles of friends into one.

or

Before you met, your lives were on different paths with different destinations. Love has brought you together and joined these separate paths into one.
The sand in these jars symbolize your separate lives, separate families, separate sets of friends, and the different life journeys you once traveled. I ask that each of you take one of the jars and that you fill the center jar together.

~The couple steps forward and takes their individual jars and fills the center jar.~

With the mixing of these grains of sand you have now symbolically joined your once separate lives. As your two lives have been inseparably combined, so now are your friends and family joined, through you into one. And your once solitary life’s paths are also now one. All that was once separate is now shared and in this sharing you both will find great comfort.

Generally speaking, the officiant is the one to do the unity ceremony whether it is done with sand or candles or anything else.... however it is not unheard of to have a mutual friend do this. It should however be someone that you both are close to and/or are comfortable with.
