Mom should consider a 2007 Ford Freestyle.
seats 6-7
Fwd or AWD
Fantastic safety ratings (built on a Volvo platform)
Great gas mileage (due to the CVT transmission)
Very reliable
starts @ about $26g (LOADED to the max about $33g)
Ford is restyling & renaming it (Taurus X) for '08 so they are currantly offering HUGE ($$$) incentives to clear the way for '08 inventory.
Look for one with the "Shale" interior, it's almost black.

I'd go for a Toyota FourRunner, there's enough room for everyone, she should be able to get a late model for under 35,000. The interior color she may have to be happy with tan or a medium color. They hold their resale value well. Gas mileage isn't that great on SUV's, so that would be a trade off, comfort but cost more.

I have a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe V6, seats 5 without third seat option rides like a car get great gas millage. It has 101,457 miles never had anything done but oil, tires, and spark plugs. Going to Disney World this July and not worried, it runs as good as day I bought it.

Tell mom to buy a 2 year used Toyota (certified pre owned if you can find one with the interior color you want) Highlander (seats 5-6) or Sienna mini-van (seats 7-8). check inventory/prices in your area at kbb.com or autotrader.com
BTW, unless you are talking about toddlers (or very skinny people), it's going to be impossible to find a mid-sized car that can transport 6 people and a driver.
