It could be just nerves as it is settling in. Its best to keep the area as quiet as possible and not to disturb them while they get used to the change. Its also a good idea to talk to the place you bought them from or a vet and get their opinion just in case it is something more than that. If the bird was okay when you bought it then it probably is just in shock and adjusting.

Take the bird back and make it their responsibility. You need to separate these two anyway to be on the safe side. Keep their ambient temperature in the mid 70's, away from drafts. In the meantime, offer the bird some fresh apple to help prevent dehydration. Give them a good pellet food for canaries, fresh water, fresh fruit and veggies. It will take 10 days to 2 weeks for them to settle in and become more active. It may be a very young bird. Hang in there and call the place you purchased it from in the morning. Have a great day everyday.

One reason could be that the trip home was too much for it. Another reason which I think will hit the nail on the head is that the canary already had a friend at the pet shop and is missing him.. That happens a lot.

My brother bought two budgies, and for about four days the male one wouldn't move, it just stayed on its perch not even eating. A few days later he bought it a companion, who settled right in and was immediately active. Your bird will come around it's just probably nervous of the new surroundings. Give it a week or so and it will be hopping around before you know it.

It is freaking out because of the change in enviroment, try putting a towel over the cage to calm it down or putting the cage in a low traffic area of your home to calm it down. If that fails, see an avian vet.
