Having had Goldens for many, many years it is not unusal for them at any age to pull a muscle or tendon. At 8 years old the joint and muscles are not as flexable as they once were so an injury can happen much more easily. You can get a warm moist pack and place it on the injured area for up to 10 minutes. To make a warm pack just get a towel, fold it once, moisen it and pop it into the microwave oven for 1 minute if it feels warm to you then it's just right if not then do 30 second more until just warm. Place it on the injured spot and just sit with her for about 10 minutes. You can do this 3 times a day. If you do not see real imporvement in 24 hours get her into the vets for a look see. OK
Hope this helps!

RE:
8 y-o golden retriever limping? Just started?
I have an 8 year old golden retreiver who just started limping. Mainly it's only one leg, yet she can still walk. She has pretty big hips. Her hips are not as flexible as they should be.
However, she has been doing just fine until about a day ago at around 4 PM. We just moved, so she now...

I understand that the vet is closed, and therefore will not be rude like most others. Since there is nothing irritating in her paw I would think it's a sprain. But It could be a cramp or something from all that running and her being overweight. Just try to refrain her from walking too much and if the limping continues tomorrow call your vet.

Hi. The Vet should check her out. I had a lab who all of a sudden started limping. I thought the same thing. Could it be a muscle or hip? As it turned out it was Lyme's disease! I know it's cold out, so it couldn't be a tick. Think about how our temperature has gone up and down and it's a possibility.
I know you love your baby. God knows I love mine. Do a vet check and be safe.
Good Luck,
Sandy

At 6 yrs they are considered geriatric. In my experience as a vet tech for 10 years I saw a lot of older, bigger dogs with this problem and they responded wonderfully to a drug called Rimadyl. Good luck!

Actually what you said is probably right. Just running around more she might have pulled or strained something. Give it a couple days and see what happens. If it seems to be getting worse they take her to a vet.

If you are really concerned I would find a vet and ask him. sounds like she needs professional help. Seems as if you have set up your computer after having just moved, the first thing I do after moving is find a good local vet for my pets.

You should take her to a vet to see whats wrong. Have you examined her leg? Look for cuts on the pads of her feet. Try lightly squeezing the entire leg until you find her point of discomfort...if its a joint you might need to take her to the vet. If its on the leg itself an ice pack may do the trick. Call your vet and ask for advice.

I would suggest looking at the dogs paws and pads first. The pads are the lumps on the the dogs paws. Many times dogs and other animals get foreign material stuck in between this pads and irritate or scratch this area. Look for stickers similar to a splinter in your finger on and in between the pads.

Take her to the vet ASAP. She may have hip dysplasia. My golden eventually got this as well, but he was 15 at the time.
