My grandma is in her 50s we know its a second degree burn because all the symptoms point to it but its a bit complicated because where shes burnt at is on her hand and she has bad arthritis in her knuckles so its swollen worse. (also my grandma has seen plenty of second degree burns to know that she has one).

Alright, the older your grandma is the bigger the problem. What other health conditions does she have?
The elderly and the very young have special health needs. Treatments that are perfectly fine for normal healthy people can be harmful to the very young and the very old.
Why are you sure its a 2nd degree burn? How did the burn happen? Cold water is the best way to stop the burn from damaging any further into the skin then it already has. However, many older folks have very thin skin and the damage could be more severe than you know.
Please take granny to the hospital and let them check it out. This is not the time to "do it yourself." If you are unsure about going to the ER, call her doctor, she must have one and get his / her advice.
I personally wouldn't chance it. Good luck.

It is really sad that some people can be so sarcastic. If one stops and thinks they could ask how far away you maybe from a hospital, I for one know where you live and it is a good distance to your nearest hospital. Go to the local Dollar General and get some triple antibiotic ointment that is used for burns, etc then wrap it up with gauze. In the morning, take her to the local pharmacy. The Pharmacist should be able to recommend something to help or advice her to go to her doctors office. Just keep in mind that your grandma will be ok because God is watching over her. Good Luck and don't pay any attention to the ones that just answered the question to get 2 points

Yes my son had second degree to third degree sun burn. Get to the doctor right away or call her own. You need a burn cream with antibiotic in it. The wound needs to cleaned and than apply cream and bandage. Change 3 times a day. Get calling ASAP! If you don't want to go that far go to drug store and get second skin. This works great for burns that are not as severe. Your pharmacist will know when you tell him whats up.

If it's a second degree burn then there are probably blisters forming and it's very very painful. Whatever you do, DO NOT POP THE BLISTERS! They will go away on their own and may become infected if popped prematurely.
I recommend taking her to the hospital because they will not only give her an antibiotic to prevent infection, but will also give her some prescription pain meds because it hurts.
Other than that...take an NSAID (like advil or aleve) for pain and to reduce the inflammatory response. I really do recommend taking her at least to her GP on Monday.

Definitely get her to a doctor if it looks severe.
Otherwise, make every effort to gently clean the wound but running the area under a slow cold water tap.
Gently pat the area dry and apply an antiseptic-ointment that is specifically suited to burns.
I don't recommend covering the burn with a plaster, as this can make the situation worse.
The best would be to apply a cotton gauze onto the area to keep it clean and allow it to get air.

I really don't mean to sound sarcastic, but..............Have you thought of taking grandma to the doctor. How old is grandma, if she requires family supervision, then you are being negligent in not taking her. The only correct answer is: Doctor. You don't make a decision on your own to treat anything unless you are a doctor and if you were, you wouldn't be asking this question on Yahoo answers. Please do the right thing and get grandma to the doctor or emergency room if the burns are more than 1/2 inch in size or if there is pus, drainage, redness, swelling or black tissue.

if you have aloe-vera, then use that because it is very healing, but if you don't have that, then you need some other type of healing lotion. The burn needs to be cleaned with hydrogen peroxide, or other disenfectant (like you use with a band-aid)...it should burn, but it needs to be done because the burn can be prone for infection.........after it has been cleaned.... take some bandaging, then wrap it up, and keep it on....you should go to the doctor, but if for some reason, you can't, then do what I said.....also if you don't have the supplies, then go to the local drug store, and ask them what you should use, and they can probably tell you how to treat it, and also what product to use......good luck...it should hurt.....that's natural.....good luck

Your best bet would be to take her to the ER. Second degree burns can be serious especially in the elderly. It can lead to infection and whatnot if left untreated. So....you should get off the computer and get grandma outta here.

How large is it? whatever you do, first thing's first- GET COLD WATER ON IT NOW...NOT ice or butter- it'll trap the heat. afterwards, try putting some yellow mustard on it to help prevent blistering. Keep reapplying the mustard because it takes the heat out. Once you have done this, take her to a doctor for further treatment. If you can't make it to a doctor, try going to a drug store and picking up some ointment until you can.

Remove clothing and jewelry around the burn and soak the burn in cool water. You can also use a cold compress but DON'T use ice. If you think it's really serious, take her to the hospital.
