I just took my state boards 3/22, and I am supposed to start working in a salon here in Oklahoma City, that has a reputation for "doin' hair," I don't have a lot of experience outside of the styles I've tried on my daughter. Quickweaves, updos, cuts, twists, stuff like that. I am worried that I will not be able to build clientele, and that I might not fit in, in this salon. They are either family, close friends and have worked together for some years. What do I do. I wanted to open my own salon, but I am running into the problem with funding, and finding a location here in OKC. Any help would be appreciated. Thankx

You have the have an attitude that you do belong there, you are good at "doin' hair" and observe and learn more than trying to fit in. You passed the boards, you have aspirations of being a salon owner, this job is a step in achieving your dream. Get the experience, get your name out there, and you'll raise the money to get your own salon. You might just have a wealthy client impressed with your skills interested in investing in you.

Go to work for them and try and learn as much as you can from their experience. At first you'll probably take on the simpler services, but in time you'll learn more from being around them. When you have down-time, watch them work on their clients or assist them and learn as much as you can. It takes time to build a clientele, but it will go faster in an established salon that already has customers. You will get overflow work and newer clients that have been referred to them. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.

You'll really struggle if you spend the money to open a brand new salon and you have no reputation or existing cusotmers. and you'll have less opportunity to learn more if you are on your own.

How exciting for you, your new and just starting out. I would just go out and do it. I have been in the hair business for 25 years and love it you'll get better as you go, you can learn alot form your fellow workers and from extra courses you can take outside of your job.it usually takes about a year to get a full client list. and it is a great job if your a renter you life is yours you pick the times you want to work and the days and how much you charge. it allows a lot of freedom. good luck!!!

Just go for it! Everyone should be able to understand you're new and not as experienced as them. Ask them to help you. Good Luck!
